Darren the Doorman on Living Your Values
I’ve taken a break from the series on Psychological Stoicism this week because I was so moved and inspired by a caller to a radio station. I want you to listen Darren, a 55-year-old doorman.
I’ve taken a break from the series on Psychological Stoicim this week because I was so moved and inspired by a caller to a radio station. I want to write about Darren, a 55-year-old doorman who completely shatters the stereotype of ‘bouncers’ in the best possible way.
I write a lot about living in line with your values. It is about being clear on your values and taking time daily to remember them, go out into the world, and live them consistently. However, this caller put that across more powerfully than I ever could. What struck me about Darren’s call is that he clearly knows what his values are, where they came from, and how important it is to live these values every day, practice them consistently, and make sure his actions align with his values.
Darren demonstrates the importance of telling AND showing. This inspired me to be aware of being more tolerant in my everyday life, not just with people I like and agree with, but with people I may not like or disagree with. You’ll never win people over or change their minds without tolerance, patience and kindness.
I could write more, but Darren says it better than me, so I’d like you to listen to him. I’d encourage you to listen to the whole seven minutes of the video at the top of the page, but if your time is limited, he talks specifically about his values and how he practices them between 3:40 and 4:34.
Psychological Stoicism will be back next week.
